Building an Effective Competitive Watchlist
Why You Need a Competitive Watchlist
Understanding your competitive landscape isn't a one-time activity — it's an ongoing process. Insyte's Competitive Intelligence feature makes it easy to stay informed.
Step 1: Identify Your Competitors
Start by categorizing your competitors:
Direct Competitors
Companies that offer a similar product to a similar market. These are your primary watchlist targets.
Indirect Competitors
Companies that solve the same problem differently. They may not compete head-to-head but can win deals.
Aspirational Competitors
Larger companies in adjacent markets that could enter your space.
Step 2: Set Up Your Watchlist
In Insyte, add each competitor to your watchlist:
- Search for the company
- Click "Add to Watchlist"
- Configure alert preferences (email, in-app, or both)
Step 3: Monitor Key Signals
Watch for these competitive signals:
- Hiring activity — New roles may signal new products or market expansion
- Funding rounds — Capital injection often precedes aggressive growth
- Leadership changes — New executives may shift strategy
- Product launches — New features that overlap with your offering
- Partnerships — Strategic alliances that change the competitive dynamic
Step 4: Turn Insights into Action
For each competitive insight, ask:
- How does this affect our positioning?
- Should we adjust our messaging?
- Are there new objections to prepare for?
- Does this create an opportunity for us?
Step 5: Share with Your Team
Competitive intelligence is most valuable when shared:
- Brief your sales team in weekly meetings
- Update battle cards with fresh insights
- Share relevant alerts with marketing for content ideas
